Self Rejection during Pollen-pistil Interactions

چکیده
Plants being sessile by nature have developed sophisticated mechanisms to assist in their selection of mating partners. During a compatible pollination event, pollen grains that have landed on the stigmatic surface at the top of the pistil will adhere to the stigmatic cells, hydrate, germinate and form pollen tubes. The actively growing pollen tubes are often capable of penetrating the stigmatic cell walls to grow down through the style and finally reach the ovary to deliver sperm for fertilization. In self-incompatible pollenpistil interactions, many of these steps may be blocked following the recognition of self-pollen. As a result, this response prevents inbreeding and promotes out-crossing between unrelated individual plants (reviewed in Lord and Russell, 2002).

Self-incompatibility and other pollen-pistil interactions.
Self-incompatibility allows plants to recognize and reject pollen from the same plant, thereby reducing inbreeding. Although in most cases self-incompatibility is controlled by a single genetic locus, recent results show that surprisingly complex signal transduction pathways and many players are involved in pollen recognition and rejection.

As a group, the flowering plants have remarkably diverse modes of reproduction that run the gamut from clonal propagation to obligate outcrossing. Articles in this volume focus on sexual reproduction, and there is great diversity even within this slice of the reproduction spectrum. Like all diverse systems, reproductive characters are the end results of molecular and genetic mechanisms that gen...
متن کاملHow flowering plants discriminate between self and non-self pollen to prevent inbreeding.
Flowering plants have evolved various genetic mechanisms to circumvent the tendency for self-fertilization created by the close proximity of male and female reproductive organs in a bisexual flower. One such mechanism is gametophytic self-incompatibility, which allows the female reproductive organ, the pistil, to distinguish between self pollen and non-self pollen; self pollen is rejected, wher...

Biochemical interactions between the pollen and the pistil allow plants fine control over fertilization. S-RNase-based pollen rejection is among the most widespread and best understood of these interactions. At least three plant families have S-RNase-based self-incompatibility (SI) systems, and S-RNases have also been implicated in interspecific pollen rejection. Although S-RNases determine the...

In Solanaceae, the S-specific interaction between the pistil S-RNase and the pollen S-Locus F-box protein controls self-incompatibility (SI). Although this interaction defines the specificity of the pollen rejection response, the identification of three pistil essential modifier genes unlinked to the S-locus (HT-B, 120K, and NaStEP) unveils a higher degree of complexity in the pollen rejection ...
